Weezer’s original bassist and founding member, Matt Sharp, recently stumbled upon a long-lost analogue tape reel of the band’s very first studio sessions. These were the recordings that were responsible for earning the band a record contract for their debut “Blue” album and features raw, untamed versions of their timeless hit songs, like Say It Ain’t So and Undone (The Sweater Song), that made the album an instant classic.
Sharp and legendary music producer Joe Chiccarrelli took these recordings to Los Angeles’ famed East/West Studios, where the Beach Boys created Pet Sounds and Sinatra recorded My Way, to take a deeper look into this mysterious reel of 1-inch Ampex tape. What the two men quickly discovered was the original lineup of the group in an explosively joyful and feral form. Making the decision to honour the original era and intention of the music, the songs were remixed from top to bottom, from tape to vinyl, in a 100% analogue process.
With Sharp as executive producer and Chiccarelli on the mix, the result of these sessions makes up the entirety of the new Weezer album titled “1192” (named after the month and year it was originally recorded.) The illuminating spirit of the performances on 1192 are guaranteed to give fans a whole new perspective on the origins of the blue album and stand on its own right as a significant and crucial entry into the band’s catalogue.
